Permanent bangles can be a beautiful addition to an existing permanent jewelry menu, but they're not just bracelets made from thicker wire. The materials, fit, forming, and finishing all deserve their own practice time. Here is how I would approach adding them to a jewelry line without buying every tool in the catalog.
Start with the design, not the tool order
Decide whether you're offering a formed bangle, a clasp-free cuff-style design, or another permanent-style bangle construction. These are different projects with different fit and wear considerations. A sample needs to fit over or around the hand as intended, feel comfortable against skin, and avoid sharp ends or an insecure connection.
My starter bench setup
My shortlist is a reliable bracelet mandrel, appropriate metal stock, smooth-jaw pliers, quality cutters, a file and polishing materials suitable for the metal. I particularly like looking at Pepe Tools for metal-forming equipment. A compact setup can do a lot if you take the time to learn each tool.
I would begin with inexpensive practice metal before moving on to gold-filled material. Gold-filled layers can be damaged by aggressive filing or finishing, and not every joining method is suitable for every material. Consult the material supplier and equipment manufacturer before selling a new construction method.
A simple practice workflow
- Create a measurement and fit guide for your sample sizes. Record the inner dimensions that fit comfortably.
- Form the sample slowly and consistently. Pay attention to keeping the piece even and the curves smooth.
- Inspect and finish all ends and surfaces so they don't catch on clothing or scratch skin.
- Wear-test your samples and document durability, comfort, and how they can be removed if needed.
- Only introduce a client-facing style after your process is repeatable and you understand material limitations.
How I would sell them
I'd photograph three bangles together, show one being shaped in a short video, and offer just a couple of finishes or textures. Don't turn a beautiful simple addition into 25 SKUs on day one. Price for your stock, labor, finishing time, waste, and the amount of skill involved, rather than treating it like a chain bracelet.
